Selling a House, or Lessons in Prayer, Part 2

In Part 1, posted on December 17, I described a yearlong process of praying for my family’s house to sell in North Carolina. I left off with this cliff-hanger: “God, it feels like we’re carrying the weight of this house on our backs … Please relieve us of this burden!”

On December 20, my husband and I signed papers to take our house off the market. Without an imminent sale, we needed to shift gears. So we began preparing to rent and refinance. But the next day, we received a surprise phone call from our realtor. She asked, “Would you consider leaving your house on the market for one more day?” Someone wanted to make an offer. Ours was an easy decision.

We’re set to close on our house in mid-February. Praise God! He did not fail us. I repeat the psalmist’s words:

I love the Lord because he hears my voice
and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen,
I will pray as long as I have breath!

-Psalm 116:1–2, NLT

This miraculous answer to prayer has certainly fueled my desire to pray more, for bigger, better things—not necessarily houses, unless of course, you’ve got a house to sell. (My phone number is 555-555-5555.)

Seriously, though, I want to tell you about why you should commit to pray with us at The Seed Company. You will get answers. And therefore you’ll want to pray more: be it Bible translation, your church, your family or that house your neighbor is trying to sell.

Here are some teams who especially need prayer partners. Pick your spot on the globe:

Suryoyo in Eurasia, Bekwarra and Nyungwe in Africa, and a cluster of languages in the Pacific.

Thank you for praying with our teams! (And thank you for praying for the sale of my house.)

Thank you for this post. I am trying to walk in faith, but just a little stressed about selling this house. The burden feels like so much. Your words encouraged me and reminded me that we serve a mighty, able and faithful God. Please pray with me that our home sells and the burden is lifted while blessing another family with a great home!

Finally another is scheduled for today!! THANK YOU for standing in agreement with me and my husband! This morning our prayer is: “God, we thank you that we can trust you for a roof over our head. You promise this and you deliver! We thank you for our home, but we need to pass it off into other hands now, and we ask for your blessing in this process. We ask you to be our primary real estate agent. Bring us together with the right buyer, someone looking now for the specific criteria we offer. Play matchmaker, Father. Give us wisdom to make any changes in the home itself or in our expectation of price to bring this about. Give us creativity to look outside the box and to think of new possibilities. We trust you with this whole transaction. Act soon. In Jesus name. Amen.” Showing in 2 hours…

Hi Sarah, I am praying with you. These are very hard times. I am praying God pairs your house with the right buyer this month. Hang in there. We waited for 17 months. It felt like a long silence. God miraculously provided for us in other ways, even while we were waiting. Every day takes so much faith in Him! I pray God provides for you today.

    Stacie and Sarah,
Be encouraged! I am also still here surviving on faith. I have released my anxiety and fears and I am focusing on my faith on God’s power and provision. I believe what He has done for others, He can do for me and my husband. I feel better, encouraged and ready now for my breakthrough!

Thank You Lord for being the center of my JOY and the source of our miracle! In Jesus name, Amen.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words… I have been praying now since December for our condo to sell, but I just haven’t had the right words “God please let this condo sell at today’s showing” just doesn’t seem to be working. But it is in fact a burden, it does feel like the weight of the house is on our backs; especially since we now have TWO mortgages (we had an opportunity to buy a house from a family friend for $30,000 below its value and couldn’t pass it up!). We have painted, replaced some of the carpet, and had the rest of the carpets cleaned to make it more appealing and move in ready. I am having a hard time trusting in God at this point becuase I just do not understand what people want? I become disappointed after speaking with my realtor after every showing because people’s expectations are just so unrealistic. The condo is for sale at $94,000 but people want a master bathroom, walk-in closets, etc…. like my realtor says “they want a Rolls Royce for the price of a Honda.” I really try to lean not on my own understanding, I recite the serenity prayer in meditation… I know I do not have control over this and I tell myself I have done all that I could and the right buyer WILL come – but trusting is very difficult when you only have $175 to last until your next pay day. Prayers please – not only for the sale of my condo; but for my faith and for the perserverance for my husband and I to get through this!

Praise report!! Our house FINALLY SOLD! Closed this week! TO GOD BE THE GLORY!! Stay encouraged, His timing was more perfect than I could have imagined than when I was in the midst of the process. He said that all things work together for good for those who love Him– and did they ever. Just moved to our new home– still amazed and humbled at His grace. Be encouraged and know that He is in control. Praying for all you on this blog! Your day is coming! :-)

I’m in the process of cleaning up what I’ve messed up…my life! I have spent many years disobedient to God and the culmination of every bad decision has descended upon me, or so it feels. I have been praying for financial relief from this house, yet I had to begin with what God says I am. House has been on the market for over 190 days listed twice. With this current listing I listened to the spirit give me the asking price. Thousands below our Original list price and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

We had multiple showings within 24 hours of putting it on the market and a couple of offers to purchase. As we dissected the terms of the bids, they were not in our favor. I know all too well the ‘games’ that people play with contract terms in real estate. I also know that the Devil is a liar.

My family is in need, and I am respecting that in the tongue is death and life. I work at remaining positive even when I can see the back of the fridge and a twinge of fear overcomes my mind. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I call on Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to profess gratitude and ask for instructions in righteousness. My prayer is a simple one…Dear Lord, thank you for all that you have done and what you are doing now. Please continue to watch over, guide, bless and protect my family. In Jesus name, Amen.

Please pray with me and my family that our house sells. God brought us a wonderful opportunity to purchase another house with land. Now that we are carrying both houses, I feel I can’t pray enough. I trust in God that he will take this burden from me.

My husband and I got an amazing opportunity to build a house at a reduced price with lots of land in our dream location. However, our house has been on the market for three months with only one showing. The house is currently listed for $25k less then what we even paid for it in 2008. Plus realtors fees on top of that. I was at such peace at the beginning of the process trusting God, but now all of a sudden it seems I’m at a hopeless point wondering if He will come through. I was asked to be the new women’s ministry leader at our church , however I live 30 mins away ( our new home will only be 10 mins away! ) . A lot of other blessings and confirmations were given to us regarding the purchasing of the acreage and building this house , however I need serious agreement in prayer for our current home to sell. There is a Sheetz gas station that was built directly behind our home 2 years after we bought our house and that ruined the only showing we’ve had. Please join in prayer that we can sell this house and not go broke and be able to move on and do God’s will!

    Hi Johanna!
I know it’s an old post, but I wanted to thank you for writing it all the same. I was looking for the right words to express my thought in a prayer and your writing really spoke to me.
We are currently selling our house because we purchased vacant land to build our new dream home that would be smaller and more affordable for us. We have been 6 weeks on the market and had more than 20 showings, but not a single offer. We dropped the price and re-listed and I’m starting to despair. The burden of carrying the mortgage and the cost of the land is crushing me, but in the same time I felt bad to complain about it in the prayer, because my family is healthy and happy. I felt kind of guilty to ask for help in those terms.

I really should know better. God always attends to our needs and we need to sell now.

Thank you again! God bless you!

I’m trying to sell our home by owner, but its been awhile and not having much success. Had several people viewing but no has no credit to buy. We need to sell asap, have wonderful chance to move to a state that is better for my health etc. I’ve been trying to find a realtor, but not having much luck with one presently. I live in a very small town, houses aren’t selling and we are getting very frustrated and its causing some problems in our marriage. We live on limited income, social security. We are also dealing with other difficult situations. Please pray for us to sell our house quickly and esp. since we have a chance to move to a state we really want to be at. We have the house listed at a very low price, we pray that God puts either a family who needs this house or a realtor who can find either an investor of family in need of this property in our path very soon. We need all the prayers we can get as well as any advice. Please share anything placed on your heart, they we may need to hear. this is really a stressful and frustrating situation, but I know God can perform miracles and Blessings even in a difficult economy and small town.
